From the architect. WordPress’s new Automattic Space is a re-imagined warehouse that was formerly a martial arts studio that had fallen into disrepair. The core concept for the transformation was to maintain the clarity and simplicity of the existing shell, and insert an adaptive new ‘sleeve’ or coating.

The plywood wall acts as a guide throughout the space. The limited structural and mechanical upgrades were left raw and minimal. A plywood wall winds throughout, guiding the visitor through the space. The wall serves several functional purposes along the way.

At the entry room and library it serves as shelving. At the front desk, the wall screens for privacy. Where the restrooms are, it allows for further privacy – so you don’t walk out of the bathroom into a giant warehouse full of people. In the kitchen and café area, the wall creates a more intimate space.

The wall’s palette of wood, black metal, and concrete reinforces the intimate feel.

Wärmedämmungen aus Polystyrol, besser bekannt unter dem Namen Styropor, sind offenbar brandgefährlich. Versetzt mit Flammschutzmitteln und oberflächlich geschützt durch eine Putzschicht, gelten Wärmedämmverbundsysteme (WDVS) mit dem Kunststoff zwar als schwer entflammbar. Doch sie sind brennbar, so das Ergebnis eines Brandversuchs für die Dokumentation "45 Min: Wahnsinn Wärmedämmung", die das NDR Fernsehen am Montag, 28. November, zeigt.

Im Falle eines Feuers können Wärmedämmverbundsysteme mit Polystyrol offenbar sogar zum Brandbeschleuniger werden. Wärmedämmverbundsysteme mit Polystyrol müssen die Anforderungen der Brandschutzklasse B1 (schwer entflammbar) erfüllen, eine Voraussetzung für ihre baurechtliche Zulassung für Mehrfamilienhäuser. Geprüft wird das in Brandversuchen, durchgeführt von Materialprüfungsanstalten - im Auftrag und auf Rechnung der Hersteller. Viele Systeme haben diese Tests bestanden und werden deutschlandweit verbaut. Doch wie aussagekräftig sind die Brandversuche?

Reporter der NDR Dokumentationsreihe "45 min" haben einen Brandversuch in der Materialprüfanstalt Braunschweig durchführen lassen. Ein Fachbetrieb hatte dort das Wärmedämmverbundsystem eines Markenherstellers aufgebaut. Zwanzig Minuten hätte es der Einwirkung heftig lodernder Flammen standhalten müssen. Doch das System fing so schnell Feuer, dass der Versuch bereits nach acht Minuten außer Kontrolle geriet. Die Feuerwehr musste wegen der heftigen Flammen und extremer Rauchgasentwicklung unter Atemschutz umgehend löschen.

Entscheidend für die rasante Brandausbreitung könnte eine Abweichung im Prüfaufbau gewesen sein. Für den Versuch wurde bewusst auf den Einbau eines sogenannten Brandschutzstreifens aus nicht brennbarer Mineralwolle über dem simulierten Fenstersturz verzichtet. Der Verzicht spiegelt die Praxis wieder - bei der Wärmedämmung wird entweder ganz oder teilweise auf Brandschutzstreifen verzichtet. Das kann verheerende Folgen haben - so im Juni dieses Jahres beim Großbrand einer Wohnanlage im niedersächsischen Delmenhorst.

Award-winning architectural practice Hawkins\Brown Architects, with Regal Homes, have just received planning permission from the London Borough of Hackney for their design of a new 6,750 sqm mixed-use development located on Wenlock Road. Situated within the Regents Canal Conservation Area, their proposal has a unique cruciform plan which not only gives the development a unique residential experience, but results in a dynamic form when seen from the Regent’s Canal. The Wenlock Road development consists of 10 storeys, comprising 4,650 sqm residential units, and 1,190 sq m commercial units located at street level. The unique plan is staggered on each level to allow all 50 residential units benefit from at least 2, if not 3 aspects. This design strategy maximizes light and ventilation into the whole flat plan and creates space for generous east and west facing terraces, as well as generous open terrace at first floor.

The main carcass of the building will be constructed of solid cross-laminated timber, a highly sustainable, modern material which is manufactured off-site. With its highest point 10 storeys high, once built it will be the tallest cross laminated timber building in Europe and match the world record, which is currently under construction in Australia.

The cross laminated elevations will be clad in slatted larch. Along the Wenlock Road elevation a dark brick screen completes the street elevation, which forms the edge of the conservation area. Once built the scheme will be named Banyan Wharf in reference to the banyan tree, which has a similar sculptural appearance.
